Euchre Strategy
Call Trump With Control
A strong Euchre call usually has bower strength, multiple trump cards, or a side ace that can win after trump is drawn. Since the makers need three tricks, one isolated trump card is rarely enough unless your partner is likely to help.
Respect the Left Bower
The left bower is easy to underrate because it looks like another suit. When you hold it, count it as trump. When opponents call trump, assume the left bower may be hidden until it suddenly changes a trick.
Lead to Help Your Partner
If your side called trump, leading trump can pull defenders out of control. If the opponents called trump, leading an ace from a side suit can create a safe trick before trump starts flying.
Do Not Overplay Partner Winners
When North is already winning a trick for your side, throw low unless there is a clear reason to take over. Five-card hands punish wasted winners more than longer trick-taking games.
Know When to Defend
Passing is an active decision. If the turn card improves the dealer, ordering it up from a weak hand can hand the opponents an easy point. On defense, look for one sure trick and one likely partner trick.
